Shalom as Safety or Soundness in Body, in the Harem

On our journey through the seven nuances of meaning to Shalom.

doveThis is the most common use of the word in Modern Hebrew. When the speaker bids one Shalom Aleichem i.e. Peace be Unto You, they are usually meaning this meaning of the word shalom. May you be Well, May you be Healthy. They are not bidding you anything like world peace or lack of conflict.

In the Old Testament it is only used this way three times. For the English reader these words are not even translated as peace, so one would have no way of knowing that the word being translated is shalom.

You shall know that your tent is safe, and you shall inspect your fold and miss nothing. Job 5:24

There is no soundness in my flesh because of thy indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. Psa. 38:3

Lo, it was for my welfare that I had great bitterness; but thou hast held back my life from the pit of destruction, for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back. Is. 38:17
